Academies are built to produce a small number of first-team players and, in the process, a much larger number of well-trained footballers who will play somewhere else. The second group is the normal outcome, not the failure case.

Adult football is a different sport

The technical level of a good academy is often higher than the fifth tier. The physical and psychological level is not. A youth international arriving in senior football meets opponents ten years older, referees who allow more contact, and a dressing room where results affect wages.

Why lower-tier clubs are a real education

A season as a first-choice goalkeeper in Tercera or Segunda Federacion provides something an academy cannot: consequences. Thirty competitive matches in a relegation fight teach game management and recovery from a public error.

The two-season rule of thumb

Recruiters generally want two consecutive seasons of regular senior minutes before treating a player as established. Career files showing many clubs in a short period are common at this level, usually because contracts are short and squads are rebuilt annually.

What to look for in a file

Minutes played, not appearances. Consecutive seasons at one competitive tier. Whether the player was first choice or a rotation option, and whether the trajectory moves upward through the pyramid over time.
