The rule change allowing the ball to be played to a teammate inside the penalty area from a goal kick did not invent short build-up, but it made it structurally cheap. A team can now start possession with a numerical advantage inside its own box.

What the goalkeeper is actually doing

• Receiving on the half-turn with an open body, so the next pass is available before pressure arrives
• Passing accurately with both feet at different weights
• Recognising the moment to abandon the plan and go long, which is a decision, not a failure

The risk is asymmetric

A misplaced pass in midfield concedes possession. A misplaced pass from the six-yard box concedes a goal. That asymmetry is why the tactic is coached with strict triggers.

What completion rates say

A short-passing completion figure in the mid-nineties is normal for a goalkeeper who mostly plays uncontested passes. It becomes meaningful only when paired with context: how often the opponent pressed, how far the passes travelled, and how often the first line of pressure was eliminated.

Long distribution is the reverse. Completion in the seventies or low eighties can be excellent, because those passes are contested by design.
