La pyramide du football espagnol : de LaLiga a la Tercera Federacion

Spain restructured the lower half of its pyramid for the 2021/22 season, and the naming still confuses people. Here is the current shape, top to bottom.

The professional tiers

LaLiga is the first tier and Segunda Division the second. Both are run as professional competitions, with promotion and relegation between them and a play-off deciding one of the promotion places from the second tier.

The federated tiers

• Primera Federacion, the third tier, played in two groups
• Segunda Federacion, the fourth tier, played in five geographic groups
• Tercera Federacion, the fifth tier, played in eighteen territorial groups aligned with the autonomous communities

Group format matters more than it sounds. A club in a five-group division travels regionally rather than nationally, which keeps costs down and makes the calendar viable for squads that are only partly professional.

Promotion is rarely automatic

In the federated tiers, winning a group is usually the only route to direct promotion. Everything else runs through play-offs, which compress a season into two or three knockout matches.

Youth football sits alongside, not below

Division de Honor Juvenil is the top national under-19 league and is not a tier of the senior pyramid. Academy players often move between a Division de Honor side and a senior federated team in the same season, which is why a single career file can show two clubs in one year.
