Clean sheets lie: how goalkeepers are actually measured

A goalkeeper behind a dominant defence collects clean sheets. A goalkeeper behind a bad one collects saves. Neither number, alone, tells you who is better.

Every goalkeeping statistic is a joint product of the goalkeeper and the eleven players in front of him. That is the central problem in evaluating the position, and no single number solves it.

Volume statistics describe the team

Save totals rise when a defence concedes shots. A goalkeeper making four saves a game may be excellent, or may be playing behind a back line that surrenders the box twenty times a match. Clean sheets invert the same bias.

Quality-adjusted shot-stopping

The more useful approach compares goals conceded against the difficulty of the shots faced. Every shot carries an expected conversion rate based on distance, angle, body part and pressure. A goalkeeper who concedes fewer than expected over a large sample is stopping shots that most goalkeepers do not. The caveat is sample size: shot-stopping differences stabilise over seasons rather than months.

The parts that never appear in a highlight

  • Claim rate on crosses and set pieces
  • Command of the six-yard box
  • Distribution under pressure, split by short and long passing
  • Defensive actions outside the area created by a high line

Reading a career file

When a file records both raw counts and rates, you can at least see the shape of the workload. That is the honest ceiling of career statistics: they describe what a goalkeeper was asked to do, and how often the outcome went his way.
